Gifts for New Homeowners: Personalised Ideas for the New Keys

Engraved keyrings and keepsakes for the new keys, with wording ideas for first homes, flats and family moves.

Matching silver new home keychain set with a house cut-out and initials

Getting the keys to a new home is one of the big moments in life, and it usually arrives in a rush of boxes, paperwork and takeaway dinners on the floor. A personalised gift marks the moment properly, and the best ones are useful from the very first day.

Why a keyring is the perfect new home gift

The new keys need somewhere to live, and the keyring they go on will be handled every single day for years. An engraved keyring turns that everyday object into a keepsake of the day they moved in. It is also small, light and easy to post, which matters when the recipients are between addresses.

Our favourite new home keyrings

Most come in silver, gold, rose gold or black. See them all in new home gifts.

What to engrave

  • The house number and street name.
  • "Our first home" with the date.
  • "Home sweet home".
  • Their surname, for example "The Patels, est. 2026".
  • The coordinates of the house.
  • For a family move: each person's name on a side, children included.

A small note on privacy: some people prefer not to carry their full address on their keys, in case they are lost. Coordinates, a street name without a number, or simply the date are good alternatives. More ideas in what to engrave.

For first-time buyers

First-time buyers have often saved for years, and the first set of keys deserves a little ceremony. A pair of matching keyrings with "Our first home" and the completion date is a gift they will keep long after they have moved on to a second or third home.

For renters and students

A new flat share or student house is a new home too. Keep the engraving general so it travels with them: a name, initials or a line such as "Home is wherever you are".

For a family move or downsizing

Moving out of a long-time family home is emotional. A keyring engraved with the old house's name or coordinates, given alongside a new set for the new address, can be a kind way to honour both.

Other personal touches

Thank-you gifts for the people who helped

Moving house is rarely a solo effort. Parents who helped with a deposit, friends who carried boxes up three flights of stairs, the neighbour who kept a spare key: a small engraved thank-you means a lot. A keyring engraved with "Thank you for helping us home" and the date, or a pen engraved for the parent who signed every form alongside them, is a lovely way to say it.

And if you are the one moving, an engraved spare-key keyring for the friend or family member who will hold your spare key is practical and thoughtful at the same time. It also makes that key easy to find in a drawer.

When to give it

Completion day itself is ideal, but a housewarming party is just as good. If the date keeps moving, as it often does, a keyring engraved with "Our first home" and the year rather than an exact date takes the pressure off.
